Brain In Action: The Neurobiology of Trauma

Bangalore: February 15-17, 2019

People who have experienced traumatic events can have significant changes in the neurobiology of their brain. The right brain holds emotions, relationship information, and unprocessed trauma, often in the form of flashbacks, body memories, intrusive thoughts and dissociated feelings. It is always turned on by an overactive amygdala. The left brain’s coherent function, which provides meaning to stay in the here and now, is interrupted by stress hormones as the result of danger signals from the amygdala.

Participants will learn to use the Body Double (bd) intervention to work with the energetic body and the ‘rhythmic rupture’ it suffers, along with the physical body and the brain, due to traumatic events. The brain-in-action, along with attachment structures, are taught through demonstration and live supervised practice and can be used immediately following the workshop in individual, couples and family therapy, as well as by educators and community organizers. This workshop expands the repertoire of students and practitioners of emdr, eft, sensory motor integration, as well as drama therapy and psychodrama.

STEVEN DUROST, PhD, LCMHC, REAT, is the Founder and Director of C.R.E.A.T.E! The Center for Expressive Arts, Therapy and Education in Manchester, NH. He teaches psychodrama courses at Springfield College-Manchester and Lesley University- Cambridge; his work was nationally recognized in 2014 with an award from the American Society of Group Psychotherapy & Psychodrama.

Containment: The Key to Safety with Action Methods

New Delhi, India: February 18-21, 2019

Our brains are hardwired to Fight, Flight or Freeze from danger. Unfortunately, long after many traumatic experiences happened, the survivor continues to use those survival defenses, forming rigid patterns that shut down or overwhelm the system with unexpressed emotion. This is especially true of grief. For many survivors, it would have been dangerous to cry out while neglect, violence or abuse was happening, while many associate grief with being a victim. So, deep pain and grief from abuse is often hidden or repressed for years, becoming the proverbial ‘elephant-in-the-room.’

However, TSM has a special Prescriptive Role, the Containing Double (cd), that helps clients work through dissociation and other defenses to access these intense feelings of grief and mourning—safely and without retraumatization. The cd was one of the first roles to be developed by TSM. Its efficacy has  been researched and it is used throughout the world, across cultures and languages. In this workshop, participants will learn and practice the Containing Double in triads, participate in full TSM psychodramas, and learn TSM’s Action Safety Structures that enhance group cohesion and provide the overarching container for deep work.

Place: Asha Training Centre, Krishna Colony.

Organizer: Vedadrama India Pvt. Ltd., PIB-Zentrum, Germany, and

Mario Cossa, RDT/MT, TEP, CAWT: I am proud to be listed among this group of outstanding healers and trainers. I have started calling myself a TSM Psychodramatist, because everything I do with psychodrama is informed by the clinical awareness I gained while becoming a Trainer for TSI and with the many years of utilizing TSM in my work.

I believe passionately in the ability of the creative and performing arts in general and expressive therapies specifically to heal, to expand consciousness, and to transform lives. I have worked with teens and those who serve them around the globe. Work with adolescents holds a primary focus for me. My latest endeavor, Motivational Arts Unlimited, is currently bringing action methods to youth and youth leaders in Indonesia and other regions of Asia. I am currently collaborating on a project to bring action methods for values education to junior and senior high school students across Bali.

DISCOVERING NEW WORLDS: Transformational Advances in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy @ Manchester Downtown Hotel
May 2 – May 5 all-day

May 2 – 5  “DISCOVERING NEW WORLDS: Transformational Advances in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy” 77th ASGPP Annual Conference. Manchester Downtown Hotel, Manchester, NH. Contact: www.asgpp.org

On May 2nd, Dr. Kate Hudgins & Dr. Steven Durost will be co-presenting:

The Awakening Godhead Within: Morenian Theory with Therapeutic Spiral Model Psychodrama
One of the most beautiful concepts of the Therapeutic Spiral Model of Psychodrama is the understanding of the sleeping/awakening child. When trauma happens, one part of the being becomes the victim child who takes the pain and the other part of the being goes to sleep, does not experience the abuse and holds the treasured qualities of the child’s spirit. When healing comes, the sleeping child awakens and emerges through the help of the roles of good enough parent/good enough partner/good enough god. The awakening child releases all the wonderful qualities it has been protecting and those qualities become integrated into the transforming adult.

Zerka Moreno says when the first and the second universe meet they ignite the autonomous healing center and change happens. In Therapeutic Spiral Model Psychodrama, the autonomous healing center is ignited at the moment the victim child feels safe. It is then the sleeping child awakens. In the moment when the protagonist engages his/her strengths, manages his/her defenses and walks to his/her trauma without falling into the trauma, then the protagonist can rescue the victim child. At that moment, with the help of the group and the creation of the sacred space of healing found in the six safety structures, the first and the second universe merge and healing happens. The victim child feels safe, the sleeping child awakens and the protagonist moves towards transformation.

Ignite your autonomous healing center through the six safety structures of the Therapeutic Spiral Model of Psychodrama and explore the sleeping/awakening Godhead child through art project, psychodrama/soicodrama and role reversal. This workshop is a merger of theory, experiential learning, psychodramatic experience, groupwork and sacred creation all aimed at increasing spontaneity, joy and healing.
